¡Conoce a los estudiantes! Meet the students!

                                  Jillian Curtis
Jillian Rose Curtis, 19 years old, was born and raised in Hollis, New Hampshire where she still currently resides when she is not at school in Florida. Although she is an only child, Jillian is very close with her family and friends. She graduated fourth in her class from Hollis Brookline High School (2012) and decided to continue her education at Stetson University (Class of 2016). Her passion for Spanish and experience of growing up in a family business led her to pursue a major in Spanish and a minor in Family Enterprise. Jillian not only focuses her time and attention on school, but also is actively involved in her sorority. Jillian holds the executive position of Academic Achievement Chair of Zeta Tau Alpha.

While finishing up her sophomore year at Stetson, Jillian is thrilled for the experience to study abroad in Puerto Rico. She is very excited to combine her passion for her major and her minor and study family businesses in a Puerto Rico. She is excited to study how family businesses in a Spanish speaking country differ than those in the United States. Jillian’s interest in family businesses stems from growing up with her grandfather’s oil business. One day, Jillian hopes to pursue a career in interpreting within the business world.

Overall, Jillian is a very enthusiastic student who has a true passion for both her Spanish major and Family Enterprise minor. She could not be more humbled to have been chosen to study abroad this upcoming summer and cannot wait to share her findings when she returns.

                                       Zach Prather

Soy Zach Prather.

                                                        Jasmine Michelle Banegas
Jasmine Banegas was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She is currently a junior at Stetson University in the process of obtaining a B.A in Psychology with minors in German and Humanities—her commencement date will take place on May 2015. As a Psychology student, her professional goal is to become a youth correctional counselor that assist in the counseling and rehabilitation of youth offenders as well as become a practicing psychologist with a specialization in anxiety. Her lifelong passion and goal is to have the opportunity to help a variety of people that are dealing with stress, anxiety, and/or chronic conditions that are interfering with their daily lives physically and mentally.
At the moment, she is a Resident Assistant for the Housing and Residential Life Department at Stetson (2013-present), a Spanish tutor for the Modern Languages department (2013-present), and the president of the German Club (2013-present) as well as the secretary of Psi Chi, The International Honor Society in Psychology (2014-present). This upcoming summer, Jasmine will conduct field work on the influences of African culture on the modern Puerto Rican music, Reggaeton also known as “Underground Music”.  Jasmine is thrilled of having the opportunity to investigate the origins of reggaeton and the influences of African culture in today’s Puerto Rican society as well as develop an understanding of Puerto Rico’s musical culture by learning about the Dem Bow rhythms, Salsa, Bomba, and etc.  Therefore, the mentored field experience will allow her to have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people in order to understand their backgrounds, living situations, and why they are how they are through the study of musical elements.

                                                   Aracely Miranda

Aracely Miranda was born in Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico. She is a sophomore, double major in Political Science and International Studies with a minor in Latin American Studies at Stetson University. Miranda is an active member of the nonprofit organization, Alliance of Active Women which lobbies for the right of farm workers.

She is very excited to go to Puerto Rico because this will be the first time she travels abroad and she believes this trip will be life changing. Also because Dr. Pamela Cappas-Toro is very energetic and fun to be around with, but at the same time responsible and demanding. Miranda plans to research the different racial components in Puerto Rico, particularly Afro-Puertorricans.
